12 Muirfield

Muirfield

This course is home to a very private and prestigious golf club - The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Muirfield is located on the edge of Gullane. This is approximately 40 minutes drive east from the centre of Edinburgh.

This is simply one of the best courses in the world. Tom Watson said that there was "not a weak hole on the course".

Designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris it has hosted 14 Open Championships. Furthermore it has hosted the Amateur Championship on many occasions as well as the Ryder, Walker and Curtis Cup Matches.

This is a formidable course at 6601 yards from the medal tees. On paper this may not seem long in modern day standards however one just needs to add the wind factor and also take into account the 151 pot bunkers strewn all over the course. It is an extremely tough test of golf.

Perhaps the most unique of its features is that the outward 9 holes form a clockwise circle around the outside of the course while the inward 9 go anti clockwise around the middle. This means that no two holes are played in the same direction which means this is a thinking mans course when it come to club selection and shot making, especially when the wind blows, which it normally does.
